It is sad to say, but a lot of the most spectacular man-made structures came, and continue to come, at an equally enormous human, environmental, and cultural cost.

I think in general the British are quite blind to America before British (and other European) colonisers arrived. There’s a famous saying that “Columbus discovered America and when he arrived he found the people living there already”, which highlights how European history has tended to overlook the fact that there were ancient tribes occupying the American continent long, long before European nations exerted their influence. To see that part of American history eroded is terribly sad.
